Excellent meal, perfect company at Restaurante Ten Con Ten

I’ve said many times that having friends prevents me from losing weight- because when you have friends, you often meet for lunch, dinner, coffee, or merienda, as well as hold drinking sessions (including those done over the internet). I think that if I didn’t have friends, I wouldn’t eat nor drink so much. But you could also say that my friends are not the cause but rather the excuse for eating too much, at times like a glutton, and breaking my diet. It’s even easier to make excuses when these friends are visiting from far-off places. I justify whatever pigging out I plan to engage in by saying, “Well, I don’t know when I’ll see them again, so we have to eat and drink together as much as we can!” The past week was a good example of this. My friends from college Dindin and Luis were in Madrid for a few days, and since they are based in Canada, I really couldn’t say when we would cross paths again. They wanted to go to Restaurante Ten con Ten, which is apparently a popula...

My first article in Mabuhay Magazine

Image
Yesterday, my friend Yvette chatted with me on Messenger, telling me she was about to go on a trip to Davao. Just a few hours later, sent me a short message which said, "Look what was in the Mabuhay Magazine on the plane!" She then sent me this photo: Mabuhay Magazine March 2019 I was so happy that she sent that photo to me, and that she said she kept the magazine so she could send it to me, as I had no idea how to get a copy of it. It was really sweet of her to do that. I can always see it online of course, but I'm old school that way. Nothing quite like feeling the paper between your fingers. My friend James asked me to write the essay for the March issue when he visited me in Madrid last Christmas. The essay was supposed to talk about some things that I've learned from traveling. The first draft was almost 2,000 words, because I included some of my favorite travel stories in it, but I eventually pared it down to 500 with much difficulty. Here's a link ...

Moving from Manila to Madrid

I moved to Madrid from Manila two and a half years or so ago. Whenever I meet people, they ask what a Filipina like me is doing in Spain, especially when they find out I moved here without knowing a soul, nor speaking the language. Well, the decision to make such a drastic move was quickly made by me after my first-ever trip to Europe three years ago. My first visit to Mercado de San Miguel During that trip, I went to seven countries. Since it was my first time to be here, I wanted to make the most of being on this side of the world, not to mention my oh-so-hard-to-get Schengen visa. I first flew to Finland and more or less worked my way to warmer climes. Spain was my last stop before flying home, and on the flight back, I made up my mind that I wanted to do two things: one, live in Europe, and two, become fluent in a new language. I thought that Spain would probably be a nice country for me to live in, because the weather is relatively mild- a rather important consideration f...
